The Millionaire from Skakava Donja
3.2.2025. 09:00
The Millionaire from Skakava Donja
On the coast of Novalja, a residential building is being developed by Ivo Filipović, the Deputy Speaker of the Brčko District Assembly, and his wife Pera.
This is just one of their properties in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
The rest of their properties are located in Zagreb, Rovinj, Novi Vinodolski, and Filipović’s hometown of Skakava Donja near Brčko. According to his estimates and purchase contracts, the Filipović family’s real estate was valued at around BAM 3.6 million by October 2024. The value of their assets would have been even higher by about BAM 600,000, the amount for which the Filipović couple have since sold an apartment in Crikvenica and a plot of land in Novi Vinodolski.
For years, Ivo Filipović has been filling out his asset declarations incompletely and inaccurately, in violation of the legal obligation imposed on all politicians in the Brčko District. He failed to list all of his properties, did not report income from the sale of real estate, and many details in his declarations differed from those in the purchase agreements. After learning about the investigation in a conversation with a CIN journalist, he attempted to clean up his asset declaration at the end of 2024. Suddenly, he and his wife gifted two apartments in Zagreb to their sons and significantly reduced the reported value of some properties compared to earlier declarations.
However, he failed to disclose that he has a house under construction on the island of Pag.

Brčko Prosecutor Judged by a „Jury“ of Convicts

Brčko Prosecutor Judged by a „Jury“ of Convicts
A convicted drug dealer, a vote trafficker, and a forger will soon have the opportunity to judge the work of the Prosecutor’s Office in Brčko – the institution that has proven their criminal acts. These convicted individuals are now members of the newly elected Brčko District Assembly, where the prosecutor will be required to submit an annual report on the work of the prosecution.
Abdulah Iljazović from Naša stranka, Pejo Mendeš from the Hrvatska seljačka stranka, and Damir Bulčević from Narod i pravda have all been convicted, while independent MP Alija Denjagić has one conviction for certifying false content and one confirmed indictment for grant misuse. He is currently suspected of vote buying during the elections.
When asked how he felt about having to “justify” his work before politicians he had once investigated, prosecutor Mujkanović responded that “the situation was not normal!”
However, these convicts, who were elected to the Assembly, can still hold their positions without hindrance. According to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Election Law, the Central Election Commission (CIK) can only revoke their mandates if they are sentenced to six months or more in prison during their term.
„We are representatives of the people, and I believe there were [people] who have been convicted but still voted, and their vote is just as important as that of those who have never been convicted“, said Iljazović.
In mid-November 2024, the representatives of the citizens in the Brčko District Assembly took an oath to conscientiously perform the duties entrusted to them in the elections. The 31 members will decide on the allocation of at least one billion BAM, which is the average four-year budget of Brčko District.

Official Vehicles for Private Adventures

Official Vehicles for Private Adventures
Husein Nanić, the former director of the Police Support Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), and his deputy Miše Ćavar misused official vehicles for personal travel.
Over eight years, they covered nearly 300,000 kilometers in official cars, traveling to their hometowns in Bužim and Tomislavgrad, despite not being entitled to do so. They also used official vehicles on weekends, holidays, and during annual leave.
They justified these trips with travel orders containing incorrect information. The costs for fuel, tolls, and maintenance have cost the citizens of BiH over 111,000 BAM.
Nanić and Ćavar had accommodation provided close to their workplaces in Sarajevo, but over the course of eight years, they received around 40,000 BAM in allowances for living-away-from-home, which are typically paid to officials for living away from their place of residence.
Journalists from the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIN) revealed that Nanić used an official car for personal trips outside BiH during his vacation, without a travel order.
Nanić and Ćavar only refrained from using these vehicles when traveling to trade shows and conferences in Las Vegas, New Zealand, China, Qatar, Singapore, Peru, and other attractive destinations.

Watch the documentary „Where is Sara?“
Sara’s mother, Aleksandra Blagojević, and father, Miloš Kuprešanin, have been tirelessly searching for their child’s grave for years. Over the past year, they’ve been joined in their quest by journalists from the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIN).
The cameras have closely followed Aleksandra and Miloš’s struggle as they navigate the obstacles within the system. Despite the support from journalists, they faced challenges in opening doors of companies, institutions, and establishments connected to their tragic experience.
At the Republika Srpska University Clinical Center in Banja Luka, an average of 20 newborns pass away annually. If parents do not claim their bodies following the autopsy, UKCRS sends them to the Public Enterprise “Gradsko groblje” [City Cemetery]. There, these infants are laid to rest alongside others who shared a similar fate.
In their relentless search for Sara, her parents were compelled to exhume two bodies from a children’s plot at the Banja Luka cemetery on Pobrđe.
